Dr. Donny George, former Director General of the Iraqi Museums and currently a Visiting Professor at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, will speak on “The Looting of the Iraq Museum.” His lecture will give a complete account of the events that led to the looting of the Iraq Museums and the archaeological sites in Iraq as well as an update on the current situation.
Professor Donny George received his Ph.D. in Prehistoric Archaeology from the University of Baghdad. He has excavated in the Bekhma Dam area, Nineveh, and Um Al Agareb and has worked on many restoration projects in Babylon, Nineveh, and Baghdad. He is the former Director General of the Iraq Museum and the former Chairman of the Iraqi State Board of Antiquities and Heritage. Professor George has played a large role in helping to protect and recover Iraqi cultural heritage after the looting of the Iraq National Museum. He was honored for his work and dedication at the Beacon Awards this past January 2008 by SAFE (Saving Antiquities for Everyone / www.savingantiquities.org).
